Tata’s Forgotten Concept Cars – From H5X to Megapixel

Today, Tata Motors stands as the third-largest carmaker in India. Presently, it is known for building some of the strongest, safest, and most durable cars. However, to reach this spot, the company had to go through a lot of phases. Over the years, it has launched numerous cars that became successful and some that failed. We all know about them, right? However, do you know that Tata has created a number of concept cars as well? If you did not know this, then you have come to the right spot. Here is the list of the forgotten Tata Concept cars.

Tata H5X

The most recent concept car showcased by Tata Motors was the Tata H5X. Today, we know the car it eventually became as none other than the Harrier. The H5X concept was showcased back in 2018. At the time, it took the entire country by storm.

People were talking about it across the country. And when the production Harrier made its way to the market, this concept’s purpose was fulfilled. It featured a very futuristic design which, at the time, was not seen on any other Tata car.

Back in the year 2000, Tata Motors, during its second appearance at the coveted Geneva International Motor Show, showcased a rather unique and lovely two-door roadster. It was called the Tata Aria Roadster.

This particular car has nothing to do with the Aria MPV that was launched in 2010. Rather than that, it was related to the Indica hatchback as it was based on it. This car showcased how Tata Motors could design a sports car.

Tata Motors, during its third appearance at the Geneva International Motor Show, also brought another Aria sports car concept. This time around, it was presented as a hardtop coupe.

It was finished in a lovely silver shade and it looked fantastic. Sadly, both Aria never came out of the concept phase. This was because the 2000s were not the time when Indian car buyers wanted to buy sports cars.

Based on the immensely popular hatchback Indica, Tata Motors showcased the design of the Tata Indiva MPV concept. This particular concept car was designed by I.D.E.A., the renowned Italian design and prototyping house.

Tata Motors and I.D.E.A. designed this MPV with a cab-forward architecture. It also featured a large greenhouse with front quarter glass. There were also a ton of sleek design elements like the projector headlamps and stylish wing mirrors. The overall concept was a very futuristic-looking car.

Now many people will mistake this concept with Indigo Marina station wagon which was launched in India. However, this was a different car. It was called the Indigo Advent. This wagon featured a bright dual-tone color theme, large multi-spoke alloy wheels, and low-profile tires.

Tata Motors unveiled the Cliffrider at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show as a lifestyle vehicle. At the time and even by today’s standard, this was an unusual concept. It was supposed to be a dual-cab pickup truck crossover that featured an Aria MPV-like face.

What’s even more interesting is that it was equipped with Rolls Royce-like suicide doors. While Tata Motors did launch a Xenon dual-cab pickup many years later, it was nowhere as cool and unique as the Cliffrider.

This particular sedan concept was one of the best concepts to be released by Tata Motors. It was officially unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. However, sadly it never made it to production.

The Prima was designed by the legendary Pininfarina design house. For those who may not know, this design house is the one behind the legendary Ferrari F40 and other cars. It is currently owned by Mahindra Automotive.

During its appearance at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Tata Motors showcased the Tata Safari Mountain Rescue concept. This particular concept was a more kitted-out concept of the Tata Safari Storme.

It was showcased to present the SUV’s capabilities for the snow-covered nations of Europe. Unfortunately, like many other concepts, it never went into production.

Tata Manza Hybrid

Long before hybrids became popular in India, Tata Motors showcased the Tata Manza Diesel-electric hybrid at the 2014 Auto Expo. While the car never made it into production, it was one of the most advanced concepts from the company.

What’s even more interesting about the Manza Hybrid is that it was the only full Diesel-electric hybrid. If Tata decides to bring this model to reality, it could become a lot more popular in the country than it already is.

Tata Connectnext Concept

In the same 2014 Auto Expo, Tata Motors also showcased the Connectnext Concept. This model was showcased by Tata to display the company’s technological advancement.

This unique five-seater concept used a clever occupant cooling system instead of a regular AC. The car also offered a heads-up display, which at the time was a very rare thing. The HUD could also be used to access cloud storage.

Back at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show, Tata Motors showcased the Megapixel Concept. The Megapixel was basically an improved version of the Tata Pixel concept. The original Pixel concept was shown at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo.

The company introduced this concept as a Range Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV). At the time, the company claimed that the Megapixel could travel up to 900 kms on a single charge. Unfortunately, this car never made it to production.
