According to the report, the Rolls Royce Ghost is owned by a car rental company, and they have been using the car on the roads of Kerala without paying proper taxes. The car was hired by a newlywed couple for a wedding video shoot when the officers saw it. While the car is owned by a Kochi-based firm, the Rolls Royce was stopped by MVD officers in Malappuram’s Kottakal. Motor Vehicle Inspector M.V. Arun and his team were inspecting vehicles when they came across the Rolls Royce.

When they went through the documents, they realized that the car was registered in Pondicherry under a fake address, and the owner has intentionally done this to avoid paying taxes in Kerala. The officers inquired about this to the occupants and found that this was a rented vehicle, and the customers had paid Rs. 2 lakh as rent for this vehicle for a day. The Rolls Royce seen here is a 2011 model Ghost which cost around Rs. 3 crore and above.

Considering how expensive the car was, the officers didn’t take the vehicle into custody. Instead, they took all the details from the customers and issued a fine. Another challenge that stopped them from taking the vehicle into custody was the occupants. The newlyweds were wearing a lot of jewelry as they were on their way to an event or wedding video shoot. Their safety would also be compromised if they took the vehicle into custody. To avoid any such issue, they let the vehicle go.

Based on the information gathered from the occupants in the car, the officers traveled to Kochi and took action against the owner. The officers issued a fine of Rs. 12,04,000 against the vehicle for evading taxes in Kerala. The exact details of the fine issued against the vehicle is not available at the moment. This is not the first time we have come across a tax evasion case from Kerala. Many actors and politicians have been involved in such tax evasion controversies.

The main reason why people do this is that we don’t have a uniform tax rate across all states. Some states and Union Territories like Pondicherry and Daman have very low road taxes, which attracts a lot of luxury car buyers to get their cars registered there. This makes it profitable for people to get their vehicles registered in such RTOs rather than their home RTOs. Actors from the Malayalam film industry like Fahadh Faasil and actor-politician Suresh Gopi have all been part of such tax evasion controversies in the past.
