William McDonough Named to TIME100 Climate List

William McDonough has been named to TIME’s inaugural TIME100 Climate list, recognizing the 100 most innovative leaders driving business climate action.
To assemble the list, TIME’s editors and reporters fielded nominations and recommendations from industry leaders and partner organizations like Global Optimism and The B Team, as well as TIMECO2’s Advisory Council, then worked to assess the candidates on a variety of factors, including recency of action, measurable results, and influence.
McDonough is most known for his professional career in architecture, which includes the design of major corporate projects including Ford, Gap, NASA and Nike—considered by some to be icons in the sustainability movement. The design concepts articulated in his co-authored book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things (2002) provided part of the foundation for the global discussion on sustainability and the circular economy.
In 2019, McDonough was also named by Fortune Magazine as one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.
“It is great to see that my life’s work – redesigning the way we think about sustainability for a more safe and circular future – has been recognized among other impactful leaders,” McDonough commented. “As I prepare for COP28 in Dubai, I look forward to continuing conversations with other industry leaders as we turn plans into action for a net-positive future.”
Leading up to COP28, McDonough will participate in a fireside chat alongside Matt Heimer, Executive Editor of Features for FORTUNE, at the Fortune Global Forum in Abu Dhabi.
During his mainstage session, titled “Changing the Narrative: from Net Zero to Net Positive,” he will be discussing his design approach, the work he is doing to implement a Circular Carbon Economy strategy, and what we can do to inspire the next generation of climate leaders and the children of our planet.
