Vintage Tata Sumo ad starring former F1 driver Narain Karthikeyan is a blast from the past [Video]

The Tata Sumo is one of the most important and iconic MUVs that were sold in India. It was based on the Tata Safari’s ladder-on-frame chassis and quickly became popular for its robust design and performance. The MUV was a popular choice amongst civilians and the military at the time. Over a decade ago, Tata Motors, in an attempt to lure in more customers, launched an advertisement with the former F1 driver and India’s fastest man, Narain Karthikeyan. Recently, we once again stumbled upon this advert, and today we reshare this iconic ad with you.

This unique and nostalgic advertisement was shared on YouTube by Tata Sumo Gold channel over a decade ago. The video starts off with Narain Karthikeyan waiting along with a Tata Motors employee at a scenic location. Narain asks the person when the Sumo Gold will arrive, and he says that it will come at any moment. Soon after this, the car arrives at the location, and Narain goes to check out the car.

Another Tata Motors employee comes out of the car and gets introduced to Narain as the Tata Sumo Gold expert. He then shows the former F1 driver the car from the outside, and the first thing that Narain notices is the new exterior decals on top of the red paint color of the Sumo Gold. Next up, the expert shows Narain Karthikeyan the car from the inside. After taking a seat in the car, he takes a look around and mentions that it is very spacious. Narain also mentions that this car comes with dual air conditioning, where another roof-mounted vent has been placed over the second row of seats.

After this, Narain also checks out the single-touch controls for the windows located in the middle of the front seats. Moving on, the Tata employee then asks Narain Karthikeyan if he would like to drive the Tata Sumo Gold and take it for a spin. To this, Narain replies that he would like to put the vehicle to the test. He then introduces team extreme as Parkour specialists. They then organize a race between team Sumo Gold, headed by Narain, and the Sumo Gold expert against team extreme.

A female model then comes with a tablet showing a map. She mentions that the race will be 5 km, and the Sumo Gold will take the road while the Parkour specialists can take whatever route they can find. Next up, they start the race, and the Parkour specialists can be seen climbing and jumping off various places. Narain Karthikeyan also drives the Sumo Gold to its limits, takes it off-road, and jumps it from different terrains. The expert mentions that the car has a roaring 3-liter CR4 diesel engine. Next up, he asks Narain to take the car off-road to reach the finish line quicker.

After going off-road, Narain jumps the Sumo Gold and lands smoothly, stating that the suspension is very good on the Sumo. The expert then adds that the Sumo Gold has a double wishbone suspension. The video also mentions that the Sumo has a high-performance clutch as well. Lastly, in terms of features, the video shows Narain Karthikeyan getting introduced to the Bluetooth connectivity feature of the company-fitted single din audio setup. Following the whole chase, the Sumo then manages to beat the team extreme.
