Lexington, Kentucky, is called the “horse capital of the world” because of the high mineral content in the soil of the Bluegrass Region of Central Kentucky. This creates stronger bones, making Thoroughbreds more durable for horse racing.

Not only is Kentucky known for horses, but it’s also recognized for its musical heritage. It’s home to the 144-mile U.S. 23 Country Music Highway in eastern Kentucky.   3. There’s a museum called Vent Haven Museum in Kentucky that’s all about ventriloquism. It’s where you can see lots of different puppets and learn about this cool art.
  4. Kentucky’s got some amazing nature spots! Cumberland Falls is known as the “Niagara of the South” because of its beautiful waterfall.
  5. The state bird is the Northern Cardinal, and the sugar maple is the state tree.
  6. Famous actors George Clooney and Johnny Depp were both born in Kentucky.

  • The Big Sandy River in eastern Kentucky gets its name from the large amount of sand bars created from floods and droughts through the years. The Big Sandy and the Kentucky River both empty into the Ohio River.
  • Kentucky is also home to Cumberland Falls, the second-largest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains and the largest waterfall in the Eastern United States, south of Niagara Falls in the Daniel Boone National Forest on the Cumberland River. This river empties into the Ohio River, as well.
