Kia Carens Scores 3 Stars In Global NCAP Crash Test But ‘Body Unstable’ [Video]

The Kia Carens is one of the popular MPVs in its segment. This MPV was recently put to the test by Global NCAP under new protocols and received a 3-star rating. This is not the first time the Kia Carens has been tested by Global NCAP. While the result may seem the same as before, Kia wanted to test the MPV under the new protocols to see if there is any improvement in terms of the score. The new protocols were implemented in 2022.

In the recently conducted crash test, it was noted that the protection offered to the driver’s neck was poor. The protection to the driver’s chest and knees was marginal. This resulted in a zero-star rating for adult occupancy protection (AOP) for Kia Carens manufactured between May 2, 2023, and December 11, 2023.

Global NCAP said in a note that this triggered an immediate reaction from Kia to improve the neck performance, enhancing the restraint systems. The crash test agency mentioned that Kia Carens MPVs manufactured after December 11, 2023, showed improved adult occupant protection. This improved the overall score of the car and pushed it from zero to 3 stars.

The MPV scored 22.07 (out of a maximum of 34). The crash test agency said that they were expecting better performance from the Kia Carens, especially because the MPV comes with 6 airbags as standard across all variants.

In both tests, the integrity of the body shell of the Kia Carens was considered unstable and not capable of withstanding further loadings. Global NCAP did not conduct the side pole test on the Kia Carens due to its 3-star rating. The seat belt reminders for the first and second rows are standard features.

Just like the Adult Occupancy Protection ratings, the Child Occupant safety has also improved when both rounds are considered. In the first round, the MPV was given a 4-star rating, with a score of 40.92 out of 49. But then, its performance in the second round – with the improved restraint system – saw protection for the three-year-old dummy improve. The Carens scored a total of 41/49, earning it a 5-star Child Occupancy Protection rating.

The Kia Carens is based on the same platform as the Seltos. It is a three-row MPV that offers a spacious cabin and a long list of features to customers. Kia offers safety features like six airbags, ESC, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, rear disc brakes, three-point seat belts for all seats, and ISOFIX anchors.

As of now, there is no official statement from Kia about the Carens that were built between May 2023 and December 2023. The Kia Carens is available with three engine options and a variety of transmission options. There is a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine which comes with iMT and DCT gearbox options.

The 1.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine is available with manual, iMT, and 6-speed automatic transmission. The 1.5-liter NA petrol engine is available with a manual transmission only. The price for the Kia Carens starts at Rs 11.52 lakh, ex-showroom, and goes all the way up to Rs 19.67 lakh, ex-showroom. Mahindra Bolero Neo and Honda Amaze were also put to the test by Global NCAP recently.
