How To Make This Firefly Craft for Kids

This sweet summer craft is perfect for older kids who are able to use a hot glue gun. A hot glue gun isn’t necessary for this craft, but it makes it easier. Practice fine motor skills with the cutting and put together of this craft. Get creative and your firefly fabulous.

Supplies Needed To Make This Firefly Craft

Supplies needed to make this firefly craft- mod podge, black tissue paper, and green tissue paper, paint brush, and  wooden spoon.

Instructions To Make This Fun and Easy Firefly Craft

Step 1

Step 1 - Firefly Craft for Kids - Gather Supplies needed to make this firefly craft- mod podge, black tissue paper, paint brush, and  wooden spoon.
Mod Podge, a paint brush, a crafting spoon, and tissue paper is what you will need.

After gathering your supplies, use scissors to cut the green and black tissue paper into small 1 inch squares.

Step 2

Step 2 - Firefly Craft for Kids -Decoupage the squares onto the craft spoon. Make the black part of the fire fly and then the glowing bottom. Use Mod podge, a paint brush, and black and green tissue paper. The spoon is held by a clothes pin.
Decoupage the squares onto the craft spoon.

Use a paintbrush and Mod Podge to decoupage the squares onto the thin end of the craft spoon. When finished, attach a couple googly eyes to the wet Mod Podge and place the craft spoon into a clothespin to dry.

Step 3

Step 3 - Firefly Craft for Kids -Firefly wings cut of bubble wrap and black construction paper with a pair of steel scissors.
Cut the wings! Make sure you have the bubble wrap wings and black wings.

While the firefly  is drying, use scissors to cut the shape of wings from the bubble wrap and black construction paper. Then use Mod Podge and a brush to decoupage the other end of the firefly. Allow it to dry completely propped up in a clothespin.

Step 4

Fold the bubble wrap wings horizontally and secure the fold with a dot of hot glue. Attach the bubble wrap wings and the black wings to the back of the firefly  with hot glue. Use the hot glue gun to secure 2 black twine antennae to the firefly.

Step 5

Use a silver or white permanent marker to make a smiley face on the firefly.

Variations Of This Fun Firefly Craft

Alternative Firefly craft with glow in the dark yellow wings, a yellow butt, and made from wooden spoons.
This is a fun alternative to the original fire fly craft.
  • If desired, glue a loop of black twine to the back of the firefly so you can use it as a Christmas ornament this winter!
  • You can also add a magnet to the back and use it to hold up your art on the fridge.
  • Also, use glow in the dark paint and paper to make your firefly extra special!
