India’s automotive landscape has witnessed remarkable growth, propelling it to become the third-largest car market globally. The Indian market has surpassed Japan to occupy the third position. The first and second position is occupied by USA and China respectively. Among the various vehicle types, SUVs have emerged as the driving force, constituting over 50% of car sales in the country. However, amidst the plenty of SUV models available, only three have achieved the impressive milestone of selling over 1 million units.

Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza, Hyundai’s Creta, and Mahindra’s Scorpio stand out as the sole SUVs in India which have achieved this remarkable sales milestone. Now, let’s delve into these details of these much loved vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Launched originally in 2016, Maruti updated the Brezza in 2022. Priced between Rs 8.34 lakh and Rs 14.14 lakh (ex-showroom), the Brezza offers a well balanced package of style, comfort, performance and affordability.

The Brezza is now powered by the K15C 1.5-litre petrol engine which delivers 103PS and 137Nm of torque. Consumers can opt for either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the Brezza is also available with a CNG powertrain options for economy conscious buyers.

Hyundai Creta

Next, we have the Hyundai Creta which debuted in the Indian market in 2015. Currently, Hyundai is selling a facelifted version of second gen Creta in India. The Hyundai Creta is available in two variants: the standard version and the sporty N Line. The pricing for the regular Creta starts at Rs 11 lakh and goes up to Rs 20.15 lakh (ex-showroom).

On the other hand, the sportier Creta N Line is priced between Rs 16.82 lakh to Rs 20.45 lakh (ex-showroom). Hyundai offers the Creta SUV with three different options which includes two petrol and one diesel engine. Along with these engines, multiple transmission options are also offered such as a manual, a DCT and an iMT. Additionally, Hyundai is also working on the EV version of Creta which can be launched soon.

Mahindra Scorpio

Last but not least, the Mahindra Scorpio which was launched in 2022. Since its launch, the Scorpio has been much loved in the Indian market. Mahindra sells the Scorpio in two avatars: the original Scorpio sold as Scorpio Classic and a much luxurious and modern version sold as Scorpio N.

The price for the Scorpio Classic starts Rs 13.59 lakh and goes up to Rs 17.35 lakh (ex-showroom). On the other hand the pricing for Scorpio N starts at Rs 13.60 lakh and goes up to Rs. 24.54 lakhs for the top end variant. The SUV is equipped with potent engines, including a petrol variant for the Scorpio-N, and featuring advanced transmission options, the Scorpio delivers robust performance across diverse terrains, making it a favorite among adventure enthusiasts.

The Mahindra Scorpio N is powered by a 2.2-liter diesel engine that produces 173 hp and 400 Nm of torque. It is also offered in a petrol version powered by a 2.0-liter turbo engine that churns out 203 hp and 380 Nm of torque. These engine options can be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
The Scorpio Classic is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 132 hp and 300 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed manual. This is the same engine as the Scorpio N but with a less powerful tune.
